Airport Route

Baltimore Penn Station to BWI Airport

MARC Penn Line is the cheapest way; Amtrak fills the off-peak gaps; a taxi only makes sense in narrow cases. Here's how the free terminal shuttle works and how to time your trip.

The 30-Second Answer

Default to MARC Penn Line on weekdays; switch to Amtrak on weekends or late evenings when MARC frequency drops. Both stop at BWI Rail Station — about a mile from the terminals — where a free shuttle bus runs continuously to all airport gates. The shuttle is included in your rail ticket; you do not pay separately.

MARC Penn Line — the default

MARC's Penn Line is the workhorse on the Baltimore-to-Washington corridor. It stops at BWI Rail Station on the way south. Trips are short — about 15 minutes from Baltimore Penn — and the fare is dramatically lower than Amtrak. The catch: MARC's service is built around the weekday commute, so frequency drops sharply on weekends, late evenings, and holidays.

How to do it

  1. Buy a MARC ticket via the MARC Tracker app, at a kiosk, or at the ticket window. Tickets are available as single-rides, daily passes, weekly, and monthly.
  2. Check the departure board at Baltimore Penn for the next southbound MARC Penn Line train. Most stop at BWI Rail Station — confirm before boarding.
  3. Ride about 15 minutes south to BWI Rail Station. The station is between the cities — you're still about a mile from the terminals.
  4. Exit and follow signs for the BWI airport shuttle. The shuttle stop is just outside the station. The shuttle is free, runs continuously, and stops at all terminals.
  5. About 10 to 15 minutes later, you're at your terminal.

Tips that actually help

  • Weekday service is heavy; weekend service is much lighter. If you're flying on a Sunday morning, check the schedule the day before — you may need to take Amtrak instead.
  • MARC tickets cannot be used on Amtrak even on the same physical tracks (except during declared cross-honoring during disruptions).
  • The free BWI shuttle meets every arriving train. You don't need a separate ticket — just walk on.
  • Bring a charger — MARC trains have power outlets, but they can be spotty. The 15-minute ride is short, but the BWI shuttle takes longer than people expect.
  • If your flight is very early (before MARC's first train), Amtrak or a taxi is the only option. Confirm MARC's first southbound departure if you have a 6 AM flight.

Amtrak — when MARC isn't running

Amtrak Northeast Regional (and some Acela trains) stop at BWI Rail Station on the way south. The trip is slightly faster than MARC, the cars are roomier and quieter, and the schedule is more spread throughout the day — including evenings and weekends when MARC service thins out.

When Amtrak is the right call

  • Weekend or holiday travel when MARC frequency drops.
  • Late evening flights when MARC's last train has already departed.
  • Tight connections where you can't risk waiting for a less-frequent MARC.
  • You're already on an Amtrak through-trip — just stay on through BWI Rail.

When MARC is clearly better

Weekday daytime travel during MARC's frequent service windows. The price difference is significant and the time difference is only a few minutes. Use Amtrak only when MARC isn't convenient.

The Free BWI Terminal Shuttle

BWI Rail Station is about a mile from the airport terminals — a quirk of the station's placement on the Northeast Corridor. The free shuttle is how you bridge that mile, and it's operated by the airport rather than the railroads.

  • Shuttle stops are clearly marked just outside BWI Rail Station — both arriving and departing.
  • Service runs continuously throughout the day. Shuttles typically meet every arriving train.
  • Buses are accessible, have luggage areas, and stop at all terminals (and the rental car center).
  • Total shuttle time is about 10 to 15 minutes depending on terminal and traffic.
  • On the return trip (BWI to rail station), the shuttle picks up at each terminal — watch for the marked signs.

Taxi or Rideshare

BWI is roughly 25 to 35 minutes from Baltimore Penn by car depending on traffic — comparable to rail when you include the shuttle. A taxi or rideshare from Baltimore Penn drops you directly at your terminal door, no shuttle needed. The trade-off is cost: several times the rail fare. Use this option when:

  • MARC isn't running and Amtrak isn't convenient (e.g., very early morning).
  • You have heavy or oversized luggage that makes the train + shuttle awkward.
  • You're traveling with small kids or accessibility needs where the multi-leg transfer is hard.
  • You're in a hurry and the shuttle wait is unacceptable.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Counting on MARC on a Sunday morning

MARC service is built around the weekday commute. Weekend service exists but is much less frequent. Always check the schedule for your specific day — for a Sunday flight, you may need Amtrak or a taxi.

Trying to use a MARC ticket on Amtrak (or vice versa)

The two operators don't cross-honor tickets in normal operation. If you bought MARC but want to take an Amtrak that's leaving sooner, you'll need a new ticket. The exception is during declared major service disruptions.

Paying for the BWI shuttle

The shuttle is free — don't tip the driver or pay anything extra. If anyone asks you to pay for the shuttle, it's not the real BWI shuttle. Look for the marked airport shuttle bus.

Cutting it too close on time

Plan for at least 25 minutes train + 15 minutes shuttle + check-in + security. From Baltimore Penn, leaving 3 hours before a domestic flight is comfortable; 2 hours is the absolute minimum if everything goes right.

Walking from BWI Rail Station to the terminals

Don't. It's a mile-plus walk along roads not designed for pedestrians. Take the free shuttle — that's why it exists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Returning from BWI to Baltimore Penn — is the process the same?

Yes, reversed. After your flight, follow signs for the BWI rail shuttle at your terminal. Ride to BWI Rail Station, then board the next northbound MARC or Amtrak to Baltimore Penn. The shuttle is still free on the return trip.

What about MARC from Baltimore Penn to DC Union Station?

That's the other direction on the same MARC Penn Line. From Baltimore Penn, you can ride MARC south through BWI and continue to DC Union Station — useful if you have business in DC.

Is there parking at BWI Rail Station?

Yes — BWI Rail Station has its own parking. For a flight, BWI Airport's own long-term parking is typically cheaper than the rail station and includes a free shuttle, so most flyers park at the airport rather than the rail station.

Are there other ways from Baltimore Penn to BWI?

Light Rail (Baltimore Light RailLink) runs from downtown Baltimore to BWI Airport directly — but it doesn't start at Baltimore Penn. You'd have to transfer from Penn to Light Rail at a downtown stop. For most travelers, MARC or Amtrak from Baltimore Penn is simpler.

Can I bring large luggage on MARC?

Yes — MARC permits standard luggage. Trains have luggage racks and overhead space, though they're not as roomy as Amtrak. Oversized items can be more challenging during peak commute hours.

What if my flight is delayed and I miss the last MARC?

Amtrak's schedule runs later than MARC on most days. If you've missed the last MARC, an Amtrak Northeast Regional is usually still available — or a taxi/rideshare back to Baltimore Penn.
