Moynihan Train Hall — Free Seating

  • Main atrium benches: Rows of wooden benches under the 92-foot skylight. The best free seating at Penn Station. Ample space, comfortable, and climate-controlled.
  • Food hall seating (upper level): Tables and chairs near the restaurants. No purchase required to sit, but gets crowded during meal times.
  • LIRR concourse benches: Seating near the LIRR departure boards. Functional but less atmospheric than the atrium.
  • Charging stations: USB and outlet charging available at multiple points throughout Moynihan. Look for the standing charging tables near the food hall.
  • Wi-Fi: Free, reliable (network: Moynihan-Free-WiFi). Strong enough for video calls.

Underground Penn Station — Limited Seating

  • NJ Transit waiting area: Rows of bench seating near the departure boards. Gets extremely crowded 4–7 PM. First-come, first-served — most commuters stand.
  • LIRR concourse seating: Limited bench seating under 7th Avenue. Functional but uncomfortable for long waits.
  • Charging: Sporadic — some outlets near columns on the NJ Transit concourse. Bring a portable charger.
  • Wi-Fi: Spotty underground. Cell signal is also weak. Download what you need before descending.

Pro tip: Even if you're taking NJ Transit, go to Moynihan to wait and eat. Walk to the underground concourse 15 minutes before departure to check the boards. This gives you a comfortable wait in Moynihan's atrium instead of standing underground. Browse the Moynihan food hall options while you wait, and read our Moynihan vs Penn Station guide to understand the layout.

  • The Porch at 30th Street: Seasonal outdoor seating area on the Schuylkill River side. Perfect for warm-weather waits with a view. Open spring through fall.
  • Charging & Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi throughout. Charging outlets available in the waiting areas and food court.

Baltimore Penn Station

  • Hours: Station open 4 AM – midnight. No overnight waiting.

Pittsburgh Penn Station

  • Rotunda waiting area: The stunning Guastavino tile dome makes this one of the most beautiful station waiting rooms in America — even if there's only one train a day. Bench seating in the main hall.
  • Limited hours: The station is primarily open around the Amtrak Pennsylvanian schedule. Check departure time and arrive accordingly.
  • Charging: Very limited. Bring your own portable charger.
  • Nearby alternative: The Strip District has coffee shops within 5 minutes (Enrico Biscotti, various cafes) where you can wait with better amenities and Wi-Fi.
