New York Penn Station
Taxis & Rideshare
- ▶Taxi pickup is on 31st Street mid-block, between 8th and 9th Avenues (Amtrak's designated stand). Street stands also sit at 7th/32nd and 8th/33rd — metered fare, no surge pricing
- ▶Uber/Lyft pickup is on 33rd Street mid-block, between 8th and 9th Avenues (350 W 33rd) — not 31st Street, which is the taxi side. Check the app, since construction moves these
- ▶During MSG events, the 7th Ave taxi line can be 20+ minutes — use the 8th Ave or 31st St exits instead
- ▶Typical fares from Penn Station: Midtown hotels $10–15, Lower Manhattan $20–30. JFK is a $70 flat rate, not a range — plus roughly $4.75 in fixed surcharges, a $5 rush-hour surcharge 4–8 PM on weekdays, tolls and tip, so budget $90–100. LaGuardia runs on the meter with a $5 airport surcharge on top
- ▶Avoid unlicensed car services soliciting inside the station — use official taxi stands or app-based rideshare
Buses
- ▶Port Authority Bus Terminal (42nd St & 8th Ave) — 8 blocks north via A/C/E subway or a 15-minute walk for NJ Transit buses, Greyhound, Peter Pan, and OurBus
- ▶M34-SBS Select Bus Service runs crosstown on 34th Street — connects Penn Station to the East Side, FDR Drive, and Javits Center
- ▶NYC MTA local buses: M4, M7, M20 stop within 1 block of Penn Station on 7th and 8th Avenues
- ▶Coach USA / Shortline suburban buses depart from Port Authority, not Penn Station
- ▶Megabus and FlixBus pick up/drop off at various Midtown locations — check your specific route
Rental Cars
- ▶No rental car counters at Penn Station — nearest locations are in Midtown
- ▶Hertz at 323 W 34th St (between 8th and 9th) — about a 3-minute walk, the closest to the station
- ▶Enterprise and Avis have Midtown branches, but none on West 34th — check current addresses when you book rather than walking to one
- ▶Budget/Avis (multiple Midtown locations) — book ahead for weekend availability
- ▶Consider: do you really need a car in Manhattan? Parking is $40–80/day. Transit + rideshare is usually cheaper and faster
Parking
- ▶No station-owned parking — this is Midtown Manhattan
- ▶Icon Parking (250 W 31st St) — closest garage, ~$45/day with online prepay discount
- ▶LAZ Parking (255 W 34th St) — 1 block from Moynihan, ~$40/day prepaid
- ▶SpotHero and ParkWhiz apps show real-time pricing and let you reserve spots — prices vary $30–70/day depending on demand
- ▶Street parking is effectively impossible in this area — don't waste time looking
- ▶If driving to catch a train, consider parking at a suburban NJ Transit or LIRR station and riding in (much cheaper)
Bike & Micromobility
- ▶Citi Bike dock directly outside Moynihan Train Hall (8th Ave & W 31st St, 97 docks). The nearest 7th Avenue dock is at W 31st, not 33rd
- ▶Day pass $19.99, single ride $4.49, annual membership $219.99 (unlimited 45-minute rides)
- ▶Shared e-scooters are NOT available here — New York's scooter-share programme excludes Manhattan entirely, so Lime and the rest operate only in the Bronx and eastern Queens. Revel shut its NYC moped service in 2023 and now does EV charging only
- ▶Bike lanes on 8th and 9th Avenues provide north-south protected cycling routes
- ▶Folding bikes are permitted on all NJ Transit, LIRR, and Amtrak trains at all times
Newark Penn Station
Taxis & Rideshare
- ▶Taxi stand on Raymond Plaza West (main exit) — metered fares within Newark
- ▶Uber/Lyft pickup on Raymond Plaza West — typical wait 3–8 minutes
- ▶Typical fares: Newark Airport $15–25, Downtown Newark $8–12, Ironbound District $8–10. Before paying for a cab to EWR, note that NJ Transit bus route 62 runs Newark Penn to all three airport terminals on every trip, 24 hours a day
- ▶NJ has a rideshare surcharge — expect fares slightly higher than app estimates
Buses
- ▶Newark Penn has a proper bus terminal, not street stops — an interior Bus Concourse with ticket office and machines, plus 12 numbered stands in the Raymond Boulevard bus lanes, reached from Raymond Plaza East. Service reaches Essex, Hudson, Union, Bergen and Passaic counties
- ▶Around 31 NJ Transit bus routes serve the station: 1, 5, 11, 21, 25, GO25, 28, 29, 30, 31, 34, 39, 40, 41, 44, 62, 65, 66, 67, 70, 71, 72, 73, 76, 78, 79, 108, 319, 361, 375 and 378. Some Newark routes — the 13, 37 and 107 among them — use Broad Street or Irvington instead, so check before you rely on one
- ▶For Jersey Gardens outlet mall, take route 40 — a direct one-seat ride, seven days a week. It boards curbside at Raymond Blvd/Raymond Plaza East rather than in the indoor bus lanes
- ▶For Port Authority Bus Terminal, take NJ Transit route 108. Intercity carriers — Greyhound, FlixBus, Peter Pan, OurBus — load on Raymond Plaza West
Parking & Rental Cars
- ▶LAZ at Edison ParkFast garage on Raymond Boulevard (rebranded from Edison in Dec 2025) — about a 2-minute walk. There is no NJ Transit-owned parking at this station
- ▶Military Park Garage (633 Broad St), NJPAC's garage — about a 10-minute walk, and priced for events rather than all-day commuting
- ▶Street metered parking on side streets — enforcement runs Monday through SATURDAY, in some areas from 7 AM to 11 PM, so weekends are not free. Sundays generally are. Check the posted signs, limits vary by block
- ▶Enterprise is inside the station itself at 1 Raymond Plaza West — walk out of the concourse, no drive needed
- ▶Consider parking here and taking NJ Transit into NYC — much cheaper than Midtown parking
Philadelphia 30th Street Station
Taxis & Rideshare
- ▶Official taxi stand outside the station — note Market Street is the SOUTH side, 30th Street the west, Arch Street the north
- ▶Uber/Lyft pickup: designated rideshare zone on 30th Street (west side of the building)
- ▶Typical fares: Center City hotels $10–15, Philadelphia Airport $25–35, Old City/Society Hill $15–20
- ▶During Amtrak arrival surges, the taxi line can build — rideshare is often faster
Buses
- ▶SEPTA bus routes 9, 30, 31, 44 and 125 stop at 30th Street Station today — but SEPTA's bus revolution Phase 1 lands 23–24 August 2026 and discontinues routes 62 and 78, with route 30 going in Phase 2. Check septa.org before relying on a route number
- ▶SEPTA Route 30 runs along Market Street to Center City and into West Philadelphia
- ▶Greyhound and Peter Pan operate from the Greyhound terminal at 1001 Filbert Street (separate location, not at 30th Street)
- ▶Megabus picks up on 30th Street (north side) — check exact location on your ticket
- ▶LUCY (Loop through University City) free shuttle runs through University City during business hours
Rental Cars & Parking
- ▶Hertz counter inside 30th Street Station (lower level near SEPTA platforms)
- ▶Enterprise and National have locations within 1 mile — shuttle service available
- ▶Station parking garage (Cira Centre garage, 30th & Arch) — $20–30/day, connected via skybridge
- ▶On-street metered parking on side streets in University City — $2/hour, 2-hour max during business hours
- ▶PPA parking lots along Market Street west of the station — $15–20/day
Bike & Scooter
- ▶Indego bike share dock directly outside the station (Market Street side)
- ▶Single ride $4.50/30 min, day pass $15, monthly $17
- ▶Protected bike lanes on Spruce/Pine Streets (2 blocks south) and on Market Street
- ▶Folding bikes permitted on SEPTA Regional Rail at all times; full-size bikes allowed off-peak
Baltimore Penn Station
Taxis & Rideshare
- ▶Taxi stand on the Charles Street side of the station
- ▶Uber/Lyft pickup: St. Paul Street (east side) or Charles Street — typical wait 3–7 minutes
- ▶Typical fares: Inner Harbor $10–15, BWI Airport $30–40, Fells Point $12–18, Camden Yards $10–12
Buses & Circulator
- ▶Charm City Circulator Purple Route (free) stops at Penn Station, running 33rd Street to Federal Hill via Charles and St. Paul — good for the Inner Harbor. It does NOT serve Fells Point or Harbor East; those are the Orange Route
- ▶MTA Maryland renumbered its whole network in 2017 — routes 3, 11 and 61 no longer exist. The station is served by CityLink Green (a St. Paul & Penn Station stop, running 24 hours), CityLink Silver, and LocalLink 51, 95 and 103
- ▶CityLink Silver stops at the station itself, not two blocks away. CityLink Gold does not serve Penn Station at all — it runs along North Avenue
- ▶Greyhound terminal is at 2110 Haines Street (separate location, ~10 minutes by car)
- ▶BoltBus no longer exists — it shut permanently in 2021 and did not become FlixBus. FlixBus serves Baltimore from the same Haines Street terminal as Greyhound, about 3 miles away, not near Penn Station
Rental Cars & Parking
- ▶No rental car counters at the station. Check current branch locations when you book — the nearest options are a short drive away in the city
- ▶Amtrak's surface lot at 21 E Lanvale Street, a block north — reopened to the public in June 2026 after years as construction staging. 178 spaces plus 6 accessible, run by SP+
- ▶Penn Station Garage at 1511 N. Charles Street — city-owned via the Parking Authority, operated by SP+, open 24/7. Note this is a different facility from the Amtrak lot above, which the two addresses are easily confused for
- ▶Street metered parking on Charles Street and side streets — rates are demand-based and vary widely by block, and most meters run Monday to SATURDAY, many until 8 PM. Always read the meter. Sundays are free citywide
- ▶For BWI Airport, the best option is the MARC Penn Line (or Amtrak) to BWI Rail Station, then the free 24-hour airport shuttle. Light RailLink also runs right into the BWI terminal with no shuttle needed — but Penn Station sits on a spur, so you'd change downtown first, making it the slow route
Pittsburgh Penn Station
Taxis & Rideshare
- ▶No dedicated taxi stand — call Yellow Cab Pittsburgh (412-321-8100) or use Uber/Lyft
- ▶Uber/Lyft pickup on Liberty Avenue or Grant Street — typical wait 5–10 minutes
- ▶Typical fares: Downtown hotels $8–12, Oakland/University area $15–20, Pittsburgh Airport $45–60
- ▶Pittsburgh has relatively affordable rideshare compared to NYC — most in-city trips under $20
Buses
- ▶Pittsburgh Regional Transit (renamed from Port Authority in 2021) serves the station — it is the western terminus of the MLK Jr. East Busway, with lettered berths, not just a curb stop
- ▶Multiple bus routes serve the Strip District and connect to Downtown, Oakland, and the South Side
- ▶For Oakland (Pitt and CMU), note the 61A/B/C/D do NOT stop at Penn Station — their nearest downtown stops are around Ross Street and Market Square, roughly half a mile away. The 61D no longer serves downtown at all as of January 2026
- ▶Greyhound and FlixBus operate from the Grant Street Transportation Center at 55 11th Street — a separate staffed building directly across 11th Street, about a 4-minute walk
- ▶Pittsburgh Airport: 28X Airport Flyer bus ($2.75) runs from Downtown, roughly every 31 minutes — catch it at Liberty Ave at Wood St heading from the airport, or Seventh Ave at Smithfield St heading to it
Rental Cars & Parking
- ▶Enterprise is at 55 11th Street, inside the Grant Street Transportation Center directly across from the station — the closest rental counter by far
- ▶Hertz and Avis have Downtown locations within 1 mile
- ▶Station-adjacent surface lot on Smallman Street — $8–12/day
- ▶Numerous parking garages in the Strip District and Downtown — $10–20/day, cheaper on weekends
- ▶Street metered parking on Liberty Avenue and side streets — free on Sundays, enforced Monday to Saturday 8 AM–6 PM. Rates vary sharply by zone: around $4.00/hour downtown against $1.50 in the Strip District, and the station sits between the two
- ▶If heading to the airport: PIT restructured its parking with the 2025 terminal and no longer has a long-term lot. The cheapest is the Shuttle Lot, around $8/day if booked a week ahead or $12 drive-up, plus tax
