New York Penn Station is at the center of the largest concentration of active rail infrastructure projects in the United States. The headline development: in May 2026 Amtrak and the federal government approved a plan to rebuild Penn Station into a light-filled train hall WITHOUT relocating Madison Square Garden, and named a master developer. Meanwhile the Gateway Hudson Tunnel is in active construction.

Newark Penn Station is benefiting from the broader Gateway Program — most notably the new Portal North Bridge, which carried its first train in March 2026. Ongoing NJ Transit station-of-good-repair work continues. No major rebuild of the station itself is funded.
