Featured: Gateway Program — Hudson Tunnel Project

New York Penn Station is at the center of the largest concentration of active rail infrastructure projects in the United States. The headline development: in May 2026 Amtrak and the federal government approved a plan to rebuild Penn Station into a light-filled train hall WITHOUT relocating Madison Square Garden, and named a master developer. Meanwhile the Gateway Hudson Tunnel is in active construction.

Featured: Gateway Program — Portal North Bridge & Hudson Tunnel

Newark Penn Station is benefiting from the broader Gateway Program — most notably the new Portal North Bridge, which carried its first train in March 2026. Ongoing NJ Transit station-of-good-repair work continues. No major rebuild of the station itself is funded.

Featured: William H. Gray III 30th Street Station Redevelopment

Philadelphia 30th Street Station is in the middle of one of the largest historic rail station renovations in the country. The $550M William H. Gray III station redevelopment is targeting substantial completion by the end of 2026, part of the much larger long-term 30th Street Station District Plan.

Featured: Baltimore Penn Station Redevelopment

Baltimore Penn Station's headline redevelopment is in flux — Amtrak and Penn Station Partners paused the expansion in June 2026 to restructure the project — while the $6B Frederick Douglass Tunnel program ramps up just south of the station, the largest NEC rail project outside of Gateway.

Featured: Second Daily Pennsylvanian (Pittsburgh–Philadelphia–NYC)

Pittsburgh Penn Station has minimal active construction. The biggest near-term news is the funded second daily Pennsylvanian, now targeted for late 2026, which would double Amtrak frequency through the station.
