Newark Penn Station Updates

Newark Penn Station is benefiting from the broader Gateway Program — most notably the new Portal North Bridge, which carried its first train in March 2026. Ongoing NJ Transit station-of-good-repair work continues. No major rebuild of the station itself is funded.

Active & Planned Projects

Gateway Program — Portal North Bridge & Hudson Tunnel

Under construction

Timeline: Portal North Bridge first track in service March 2026; Hudson Tunnel completion ~2035

Newark Penn benefits indirectly from the Gateway Program's two headline projects. The replacement Portal North Bridge over the Hackensack — a fixed span that no longer has to open for river traffic — carried its first train on March 13, 2026, with a second cutover phase due in fall 2026 (the project came in roughly a year early and under its $1.5B budget). The 116-year-old swing bridge it replaces was the single biggest source of NEC delays. Separately, the new Hudson River rail tunnel is in active construction (7 of 10 packages underway; first tunnel-boring machine expected to start from North Bergen toward Manhattan in mid-to-late 2026).

Impact: The Portal North Bridge is already improving on-time performance for NJ Transit and Amtrak service through Newark. Eventual Hudson Tunnel completion will allow more trains in and out of Newark.

NJ Transit Station-of-Good-Repair Work

Funded

Timeline: Ongoing through 2027

NJ Transit is upgrading platforms, lighting, ADA elevators, and the historic concourse waiting area at Newark Penn as part of its capital plan. Work is being done in phases to minimize service disruption.

Impact: Improved accessibility, cleaner facilities, and refreshed Art Deco architectural details. No service changes expected.

AirTrain Newark Replacement

Under construction

Timeline: Major construction underway; new system expected to open ~2030

The Port Authority is replacing the entire Newark AirTrain monorail with a new $3.5B system; guideway construction began in late 2025. Since January 15, 2026, AirTrain service has been suspended on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m., with shuttle buses (every 4–5 minutes) connecting the airport rail station to all terminals during the outage. Outages pause for the summer peak (Memorial Day–Labor Day) and the winter holidays, and more are planned in 2027–2028 as construction progresses.

Impact: Airport-bound travelers should budget extra time on weekday daytimes through the construction period — take NJ Transit/Amtrak to Newark Airport station as usual, then the shuttle bus if AirTrain is suspended. When the new AirTrain opens (~2030), it will be faster, more reliable, and fully accessible.
