Penn Station Holiday Travel
Thanksgiving week is the busiest stretch of the year at Penn Station. Most of the pain lands on two days, and on the other days it's much calmer. Here's the 2026 calendar, the parade-morning trap next door, and how to get through the station on a crush day with bags.
The short version
- Avoid Wednesday, Nov 25 and Sunday, Nov 29 if you can. Leave Tuesday, come back Saturday or Monday, and the station is a different place.
- Thanksgiving morning, stay off 34th Street.The Macy's parade finishes at 7th Avenue, right beside the station. Use Moynihan's 8th Avenue entrances.
- Sort out tickets and bags before you arrive. Queues back up first on the busy days, and there are no lockers anywhere in the station.
The 2026 Holiday Calendar
The railroads announce holiday service a week or two ahead, so this year's specifics aren't out yet. What follows is the 2026 calendar with last year's pattern, which has held steady for years. We'll update it when the 2026 announcements land.

Last year Amtrak's extra Northeast Regional cars started on the Tuesday. Early leavers are already moving; this is the easy day to go.

Trains run holiday schedules and are usually much quieter. But the Macy’s parade finishes on 34th Street at 7th Avenue, on Penn Station’s doorstep, from 8:30 AM until about noon.

Thanksgiving Week
Amtrak treats Thanksgiving as its peak. Last year it added extra cars to Northeast Regional trains from the Tuesday through the Sunday, and the Sunday after the holiday was its busiest day. Fares rise as trains fill, so the earlier you book, the less you pay and the likelier you are to get the train you want.
NJ Transitran its normal weekday schedule on the Wednesday last year, plus extra “early getaway” trains from Penn Station starting at 2 PM on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, Raritan Valley, Morris & Essex and Port Jervis lines. Thanksgiving Day ran on a weekend/holiday schedule. If you're heading for Newark Airport, those early trains are your friend — see Penn Station to the airports.
The LIRR ran a holiday/weekend schedule on Thanksgiving Day last year, with extra trains before and after the parade.
Thanksgiving morning: the parade ends next door
The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade starts at 8:30 AM on the Upper West Side and finishes on 34th Street at 7th Avenue — one of Penn Station's corners. Until around noon, the 7th Avenue and 34th Street side is crowd barriers and closed streets, and last year some subway entrances and exits at the station were shut. Come and go through Moynihan's 8th Avenue entrances or the 31st Street entrance, and don't plan a taxi pickup on 34th Street. Our entrance guide shows every door.
Getting Through on a Crush Day
Go to the right building first
Amtrak boards from Moynihan Train Hall on 8th Avenue. NJ Transit’s tickets, boards and waiting area are in the underground concourse on the 7th Avenue side, and Moynihan can’t reach Tracks 1–4 at all. On a crush day, starting in the wrong building costs you the ten minutes you don’t have.
Buy the ticket before you arrive
Ticket-machine queues are the first thing to back up. Buy in the Amtrak, NJ Transit or TrainTime app, and buy your return at the same time so the trip home skips the line too.
Arrive earlier than you think
Tracks still post only minutes before departure, and the board rush is bigger when every train is full. Twenty to thirty minutes of margin is sensible on the two heaviest days.
Don’t plan on a seat while you wait
Moynihan’s seating fills on crush afternoons. The Metropolitan Lounge takes Acela First Class, sleeper passengers, Select Plus and Select Executive members, or a $50 single-visit pass — but on weekends it closes at 9 PM (7:00 AM–9:00 PM), so it won’t help on a late Sunday return.
Eat before the platform
Food-hall queues peak at the same moments the trains do. Buy something before your track posts, not after.

Christmas & New Year's
December is busy in a different way. The trains are less of a crush than at Thanksgiving, but Midtown around the station is packed all month, and the Macy's holiday windows put crowds on 34th Street a block east of Penn Station. Christmas Eve is busy in the afternoon and quiet after; Christmas Day runs on holiday schedules and is usually the quietest day of the season.
New Year's Eveis busy late rather than early. Last year the LIRR added 11 extra trains in the evening and 12 more overnight after midnight, and NJ Transit usually adds late service too — check your railroad's announcement the week before. Times Square is ten blocks north, and the subway around it is jammed after midnight.
One thing to plan for if you're heading home after the ball drop: Moynihan Train Hall's normal hours are 5:00 AM–1:00 AM daily. Unless it announces longer hours for the night, after 1 AM you reach the trains through the underground concourse, which is open 24/7. See Penn Station after dark for what's open overnight.
When Winter Weather Hits
A storm on a crush day compounds everything: delays back up, platforms fill, and connections get missed. Check your railroad's service alerts before you leave for the station, not when you arrive, and look up your fare's change rules before you need them — they differ by fare type.
