Philadelphia Penn Station Updates

Philadelphia 30th Street Station is in the middle of one of the largest historic rail station renovations in the country. The $550M William H. Gray III station redevelopment is targeting substantial completion by the end of 2026, part of the much larger long-term 30th Street Station District Plan.

Active & Planned Projects

William H. Gray III 30th Street Station Redevelopment

Under construction

Timeline: Began 2024; main station work targeted to finish by end of 2026

A $550M, ~500,000-sq-ft renovation of the station itself led by Amtrak with Plenary Infrastructure โ€” restoration of the historic main hall, expanded retail concourse, modernized SEPTA platforms, new elevators at the 31st Street entrance, and a new head house at 30th Street. Phase 1 (31st Street entrance improvements) is complete. This is the first piece of the broader $10B 30th Street Station District Plan, which envisions an entirely new transit-centered neighborhood over the rail yards in the decades ahead.

Impact: Most work happens behind hoarding without major service impact, though there are temporary entrance changes. When the station renovation wraps (targeted end of 2026), 30th Street will be one of the most modern intercity stations in the US while preserving its 1933 Neoclassical architecture.

Market Street Bridge Rehabilitation

Under construction

Timeline: Underway 2026

A $148.9M PennDOT project to rehabilitate the bridges carrying Market Street over the Amtrak tracks and I-76 beside the station. Construction has closed a section of southbound 30th Street and reduced westbound Market Street to one lane at the station.

Impact: Temporary traffic and pedestrian-routing changes around the station's Market Street side. No rail service impact.

Roof & Skylight Restoration

Recently completed

Timeline: Completed 2024

Multi-year project to restore the original copper roof, lighting, and the historic skylights over the main concourse. The restoration revealed original architectural details that had been hidden for decades.

Impact: The main waiting room is dramatically brighter and more striking than it has been in 50+ years. No service impact.

Amtrak Acela Fleet Replacement

Under construction

Timeline: NextGen Acela in service since August 2025; full 28-trainset rollout through 2027

Not station-specific, but 30th Street is one of the busiest Acela stops. The new NextGen Acela (Avelia Liberty) trainsets entered revenue service on August 28, 2025, and passed one million customer trips by May 2026. All 28 trainsets phase in through 2027, gradually replacing the original 2000-era Acela fleet.

Impact: Faster, more comfortable Acela service through 30th Street, with roughly 25% more seats per train.
