Pittsburgh Penn Station Updates

Pittsburgh Penn Station has minimal active construction. The biggest news is the long-discussed potential return of expanded Amtrak service to Pittsburgh, which would dramatically change the station's role.

Active & Planned Projects

Proposed Pittsburgh–Philadelphia Second Daily Train

Funded

Timeline: Service expected to begin 2026–2027

Amtrak and PennDOT have funded a second daily Pennsylvanian round trip between Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia/New York. Currently only one Amtrak train per day serves Pittsburgh; this would double frequency.

Impact: Pittsburgh travelers gain a second daily option, with better departure times. Increased ridership through the historic station.

Pittsburgh Union Station Building Preservation

Recently completed

Timeline: Major restoration completed 2023

The historic Burnham-designed rotunda underwent significant restoration including cleaning of the Guastavino tile dome, terracotta exterior repairs, and lighting upgrades. The station's residential apartments above (The Pennsylvanian) were also renovated.

Impact: The station's architectural details are once again visible after years of weathering. No service impact.

Long-Term: Amtrak Connects US — Pittsburgh Expansion

Proposed

Timeline: Beyond 2030, contingent on federal funding

Amtrak's long-term vision includes new routes from Pittsburgh to Cleveland, Columbus, and Chicago, plus expanded service to Philadelphia/NYC. None of these routes are currently funded for construction.

Impact: If funded, Pittsburgh Penn would transform from a once-daily stop into a regional hub. No near-term changes expected.
