Track Layout
Penn Station has 21 tracks arranged beneath the street in an east-west orientation. The tracks are divided into the West End (accessible from Moynihan) and the East End (accessible from the underground 7th Avenue concourse). Understanding the track numbering helps you position yourself for the fastest boarding.
| Tracks | Operator | Access from | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tracks 1–4 (Far West) | Amtrak overflow / occasional LIRR | Moynihan Train Hall, west end stairs | These tracks are farthest west and least used for commuter service. |
| Tracks 5–12 (West-Center) | Amtrak (primary), LIRR West End | Moynihan Train Hall main concourse | All Acela and most Northeast Regional departures use these tracks. LIRR West End branches also board here. |
| Tracks 13–17 (Center-East) | NJ Transit (primary), LIRR | Underground concourse, NJ Transit departure area | The heart of NJ Transit operations. Track assignments posted ~10 min before departure, causing the infamous 'board rush.' |
| Tracks 18–21 (Far East) | NJ Transit, LIRR East End | Underground concourse, east side near 7th Avenue | LIRR Babylon and other South Shore branches often use these tracks. |
Walking Routes
Times for getting between key points inside and around the station complex.
Use the underground 33rd Street connector — follow signs for 'Penn Station / NJ Transit' from Moynihan. Or walk outside via 33rd Street, often faster at rush hour.
Both are at the same level, just east vs center under 7th Avenue. Walk directly through the connecting corridor.
Exit Moynihan onto 8th Avenue, walk east on 33rd Street to 6th Avenue. Or use the underground concourse exit at 33rd & 7th, then walk one block east.
MSG sits directly above the underground station. Use the 7th Avenue / 33rd Street exit and the MSG entrance is on the corner.
Exit at 33rd & 7th Ave and walk one block east on 33rd Street. PATH runs to Hoboken, Journal Square, and Newark.
8 blocks north on 8th Avenue. Faster: take the A/C/E one stop from 34th St to 42nd St–Port Authority.
